Synth and Peth sauntered onto the bridge. A reddish planet with orange highlights was visible on the viewfinder.

“Is this the planet where the worms are?” Peth asked no one in particular.

“Yes, the planet is known as Erastus. But the creatures that we want are not worms,” a middle-aged man replied. He craned his neck to look Peth in the eye.

“As long as the beings have the properties that we seek, then we shall collect them. We will need an advantage for the battle to come,” Synth said.

“Who are you to question us?” Peth asked the man.

“Forgive my impertinence, Your Majesty. I’m Drexler, your chief scientist.” Drexler bowed.

“How long will the worms live after having been removed from the planet? Can they survive on another planet?”

“Approximately three weeks. We might be able to breed them in the Alpha Proxima system. I believe the planet Janicomar has a similar climate to Erastus, and will provide the best chance for the creatures’ survival. The creatures are known as ‘ground pounders,’ not ‘worms,’ and are native to the planet. If we remove these creatures entirely, then the planet will die. But I believe there is a way to remove a small percentage without upsetting the planet’s ecology.”

Peth gave Drexler a cold stare. “The planet is not my concern. The creatures are. I need you to transport to the planet and study them and their immediate environment. Once you have enough data, then we shall proceed,” Peth said.

“It shall be done.”
